So you’re redecorating your space and you’re out shopping for new decor. You see this amazingly gorgeous vase that you know you will not be able to forget. This is exactly what you have been yearning for. Beautiful, classy pieces, just like this one. Ooh now you know for sure you’re space is going to look AWESOME!
But wait. Don’t buy that vase!
Not yet anyway…
You don’t know exactly what your design scheme is yet, or what decor items you need. You don’t even know how much it’s all going to cost you, and yeah, look that that price tag! This one piece is more than half of what you can stomach spending on new decor. You need it to put it back down, like right now.
As much as you want this new vase (or insert a different dreamy design object here), you are on a budget sister, and you need to spend your money wisely. Spend it on the items that will actually help create the room of your dreams, and bring your design vision to life. Don’t make impulse purchases on single items, that you think you can’t live without.
That’s not how you make a beautiful space.
So how do you make a beautiful space? Well you need to think of the whole entire room. The whole thing needs to match your vision. The big things matter more at this point. The way your furniture is arranged, the paint colour, whether or not you have a feature wall, the use of colours and textures, and how does the room make you feel when you enter it, etc.
If you’re totally lost on all that, check out my post on How to Style your Living Room like a Pro, and How to Style your Living Room like a Pro; Part 2.
The decor pieces you buy are really important. But just make sure they are the right pieces. You need a plan on where you need a piece and what type/size you need.
Once you know that, THAT’S WHEN you go out shopping. Then you go on a mad hunt for items that fit your criteria. And you buy ONLY those items. Nothing else.
Ok fine, maybe that shag pillow too.. 😉
Here is a prime example. .
I have a coffee table that I want to decorate. I have looked up some inspiration, and decided I want my coffee table decor to look something like this:
I really want to focus on this one aspect of this coffee table:
So, now I can compile a list of all the items I need.
– 2 designer coffee table books
– 1 tray
– 1 faux flower bouquet & vase (large size)
– 1 gold or silver metallic object (medium size)
– 1 tiny bowl or plate
– 2-3 tiny objects (personal items will do ) to place in the small bowl or plate.
So I’m going to go searching for only those items. If i find a crazy beautiful item that makes my heart skip a beat. I’m going to have to refer to my list. Does it fit in with what I need?
If yes, I can buy it! If not, sorry… it’s gotta go back on the shelf :(.
This will pay off. You will get the exact decor and design you were dreaming of, and you won’t have wasted your money on things you didn’t even need. That’s a win win in my book!
