Before I ever got to this point in my business and blogging journey, I dreamed of being a professional in my industry. I dreamed of feeling like I knew what I was doing, and feeling good about what I was offering. It was so easy to dream about it, but in my reality at the time, I was feeling like a fraud. Have you ever heard of Imposter Syndrome? It’s where you feel like are you just posing as a (insert your new job title here), and you feel really insecure, and are anxious and afraid. Afraid that others will see right through you, and call you out for being nothing but a girl with ambition, no credentials to your name, no experience to back you up, but just an amateur, posing as an experienced professional, trying to lure in new clients, who have no idea how new you really are.
Wellll, yes, I have experienced Imposter Syndrome. First as a newborn photographer, and then as an interior decorator. Actually, I also felt it when I was a new teacher! So it’s real, and it’s totally normal. Google it!
1.CONFIDENCE
One thing that really helped me with this, other than time and actual experience (ha!), is getting my office together and presenting a polished front. How can you not feel like the real deal when you are literally working in a kick ass office?! It’s impossible to not feel good and secure about yourself and what you are offering to your clients/customers, when you’ve got this beautiful workspace backing you up.

You need a pretty home office, because it gives you confidence and inspiration.
Even now, when I’m feeling insecure, or a little lost and confused about which direction I am going in with my business, I step into my office (which is usually clean and uncluttered, even if the rest of my home isn’t!), I sip my coffee, look around, take it all in, and then I feel it. I feel inspiration. I feel something stir inside me, and I start working.
2. INSPIRATION
Something about having this space, it keeps me going. It’s part of my support system in a sense, and my reminder of ” Hey, you are a creative person, with passion, and something to offer this world, so don’t forget that. Now go out there and do something about it!”

3. ENCOURAGEMENT
I don’t know about you, but the people in my life, they don’t always get what it’s like to be a creative, or an entrepreneur for that matter. They are super supportive and give me advice as best they can. And my dear husband will always tell me to go for it, even when he doesn’t fully grasp the latest new idea that I’m super excited about! No one truly gets it though, unless they are in it as well. I know I need to work on reaching out to other creative girl bosses, once I work up the nerve. But for now, having this space, it truly helps. I feel as though I am just where I am supposed to be. When I walk in here, it just feels right. I immediately know that I am on the right track, and this whole roller coaster ride of following your dreams, well it’s totally worth it. And I want to keep on moving forward, as scary as it may be at times.
When I look back at my “imposter days”, I wish I could tell my old self to just tune all of that out, and keep on taking steps forward. But I know that it all served a purpose. And hindsight is 20/20 like they say. However, this hindsight did show me that once I created this beautiful space, I felt legit. I felt like hey world! Look at me now, I AM a real decorator. I AM a real designer. I AM a real professional. It doesn’t matter what you say now! But guess what, it was never anyone really saying anything to me in the first place. IT was my own inner critic the whole time. My own insecurities, and perceived failings, that kept holding me back. Well my inner critic really did silence itself once this office came to be. I felt way more confident, and sure of my own capabilities. Maybe it’s because I designed it myself, and I proved to myself I am a good designer. But it also made me feel confident in front of others. I started holding client meetings here, and video conferencing with clients as well. It was so nice to have a pretty and polished backdrop on those calls! This office was definitely a confidence booster, for sure. No more feeling like a fraud, no more hiding.
So what does having a fabulous home office give you? It gives you what you need to feel like the boss babe you truly are. It gives you encouragement when you need a push to keep going, confidence when you doubt your greatness, inspiration when you feel stuck, and most importantly, it;s a reminder of why you are doing what you are doing, and that you need to keep on doing it!
